Equality for All?: The Failure of the American Revolution to Obtain Equality for Either African Americans or Women

A 5 page contention that the American Revolution, and indeed the years following that revolution, did little toward changing the inequalities which existed in this country in regard to African Americans and women. Notes that while certain inroads would be made in the years which followed, even the Emancipation Proclamation and the rights of women to vote and own property, accomplished little in terms of achieving true equality. Ginny must weigh her choices and their consequences in regards to returning to work after the child is born or staying and home and not providing financially for the family. She reflects back to her studies at university and the writings and lives of women writers such as Virginia Woolf and Charlotte Perkins Gilman who at the time had inspired her to campaign for women’s freedom of choice. Now Ginny finds that the writings and lives of Woolf and Gilman do little to provide her with guidance in her own life decisions.
